Long before Europeans settled in North America, festivals of thanks and celebrations of harvest took place in Europe in the month of October. The very first Thanksgiving celebration in North America took place in 1578 in Canada when Martin Frobisher, an explorer from England. in search of the Northwest Passage. Being sanctified is about being set apart, just for God, so "100% God's" is good. But it is still about how we live, and the irony is our inclination, if we are entirely for God, to not be for people. But God is entirely for people, so being entirely for God means always living to help others. I have a feeling you can make that a little more kid friendly, which I will appreciate. It is a bit nervewracking, as I have to find or write a new story each year - this will be my twelfth Christmas - but so far I have managed to cook up something new each time. Sometimes I have found a traditional tale more or less entire, on other occasions I have written something more or less from scratch, often using some scrap of Christmas folklore I have come across. I always tell the tales rather than reading them, but I do produce a written version as well - Links are on the archive page on our church website here http://www.angelfire.com/planet/sealpeterandpaul/archive.html - scroll down to find the Christmas stories. If they are any use, please feel free to pinch them.

The Lion Storyteller Christmas book, by Bob Hartman has some lovely stories in it, and I have found it a good source of stories.
If you can find them, Ruth Sawyer's books , The Long Christmas and Joy to the World, and a book of Christmas stories fro the Bruderhof called "Behold that star" - all very ancient, but you might find second hand copies - have good material. Some of the stories in these books need quite a bit of work to make them usable, but they are good source material. I've struggled with how to tell children-- and adults, really-- that God wants them to forgive everyone, when I know that some of them have been horribly abused- physically, emotionally, and sexually. I want to make sure they know that when you forgive someone, it doesn't mean that you're going to give them permission to hurt you again. You can release their bonds, you can stop the punishment, but that doesn't mean that they will be allowed in situations where they can hurt you. Or hurt others. This is a tough one.Becky Ardell Downshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06668654420252380253noreply@blogger.com
